Name
Forest and Field Flower Co
Hometown
Front Royal, VA
When did you start? Background? Education? Experience?
Our names are Courtney and Skye. We have been best friends since high school, roommates at one point and now business partners.
I, Courtney, have been in the wedding world since 2015 when I started working for an event design and coordination company in Purcellville, VA. I graduated from James Madison University in the Fall of 2015. My degree is in Hospitality Management. After college, I worked as an event coordinator at Lake Frederick and eventually became the venue manager. Now I am taking on the floral and design aspect of weddings with my best friend, Skye.
Skye has always been incredibly artistic. She started her own calligraphy business, which eventually led her to do calligraphy for weddings. She has done everything from personalized gifts to welcome signs!
Why do you do what you do?
The, “why” is the simplest answer, we love to make people happy. We have both always been like that and if we can make people happy through our passions of artwork and design, then that’s even better.
What do your services include?
Our services include anything anyone can dream up involving flowers. Typically that takes the form of bouquets, centerpieces, boutonnieres, corsages, and beautiful installations on pergolas and arbors, but we can also make flower crowns, dog collars, hair pieces – again, anything anyone can dream up involving flowers. We also make balloon garlands!
When should a couple book a florist for their wedding?
Couples should book a florist 5 to 7 months before their wedding. A special event that is not a wedding can book much closer to the actual event date since there are typically not as many details to go over. The absolute latest would be a month from the wedding, but you run the risk of your favorite florist being booked on your date.
What items should a couple have completed prior to having a consultation?
Before reaching out to a florist, it is best to know how many bridesmaids and groomsmen you’re going to have, as well as how many family members you’re going to want to provide flowers for. It is also nice to know how many delivery locations there will be. For example, you’re getting married in a church, but the reception is the next town over. Those details are essential!
Best way to save money on flowers?
The best way to save money is to use flowers that still give you the same aesthetic you’re going for, but saving the pricier flowers for your bouquet. That might mean substituting the Dahlias for Carnations. Also, greenery is very on trend right now and super affordable. Luckily, we don’t see that trend exiting the wedding scene any time soon!
Helpful tips to come prepared for your consultation?
It’s good to come prepared, but a florist’s job is to help the couple figure out their style and aesthetic. Some people dream of their weddings their entire lives and have every detail, down to the last spray rose, planned. That’s great! We love those couples. Other people are like, “oh I need a florist?” We love those couples too!
What tips do you have for picking a good florist? Or a florist that fits the couple?
Our tips for picking a florist would be to check out their social media, their website and then look at your wedding Pinterest board. Are the pictures similar? Are the styles of the bouquets similar? If you want a long cascading bouquet, but all you see on a florist’s website/social is mounded, super symmetrical bouquets, then maybe that florist just isn’t the one! That’s okay, but make sure your styles are lining up. Obviously florists are creative people and there’s a first time for everything, but if you only see one style, then consider that might be that florist’s style.
